Adventure Holidays in Tonga

One thing that Tonga has plenty of and that's adventure holiday experiences. From sport and game fishing catching wahoo, walu, marlin and other great catches, to scuba diving some of the many exciting coral reefs found around the many island groups. Whale watching is a big attraction in Tonga but is a seasonal occurence (July through to November) as the whales migrate north through the islands following a 6000 mile journey up from Antarctica. Sailing is also a big adventure activity. Of course, if you prefer land-based adventures, these are also possible. Check the list of adventure ideas below and view a map of Tonga.

Water-based activities in Tonga

  • Whale watching tours are very popular and strongly recommended when visiting Tonga. Some tours allow you to kayak or swim with the whales, or view them from a boat or sailing charter. Operators in Vava'u include Kiwi Magic Charters, Dolphin Pacific Diving, Melinda Sea Adventures, Sailing Safaries, Whaleswim Adventures, Hakula Lodge's Whales-in-the-Wild and Whale Watch Vava'u. In Tongatapu try Royal Sunset Island Resort.
  • Fishing - the islands of Tonga are spread over 400 kilometres and the nutrient-rich oceans ensure fantastic fishing opportunities - game fishing, sport fishing and deep-sea fishing.
  • Scuba Diving - so many great diving locations and professional Tonga dive operators will ensure great diving trips for novice and experienced divers visiting the Kingdom.
  • Sailing Charters - explore remote beaches, sight whales, fish and more!
  • Vava'u Adventures Water Sports organise banana boat rides, wake-boarding, knee-boarding, jet-boat rides and more if you are staying in Vava'u.
  • Or hire a sailing dinghy from Vava'u Adventures Sailing Dinghies
  • Mariner’s Guided Camping Tours in Ha'apai offer Volcano Tours, Island Tours and Kayak Tours lasting from 2-7 days. Whale-watching also available in season.
  • The Friendly Islands Kayak Company offer ocean kayaking tours in the Vava'u islands and also the Ha'apai islands.
Tonga land-based activities
  • Trekking on 'Eua island. See stunning scenery and lava rock formations, caves, wild horses, land and sea birds, rainforests and waterfalls.
  • Birdwatching with endemic species such as the Tongan Megapode on Nuiafo'ou. Visit the Tongan Wildlife Centre on the main island of Tongatapu. Bird watching tours are available.
  • Sightseeing tours are also available, such as day trips around Tongatapu, and a visit to the The Tongan National Culture Centre.
  • Vava'u Adventures Kart Safaris offer guided tours along dirt tracks around Vava'u Island - a fun way to explore remote beaches, lookouts, plantations and general surroundings.
  • The TongaSphere in Vava'u is a big bubble 4 metres in diameter in which you ride (wet or dry!) down a hill slope. Jumping Castles also on site for the smaller kids at a family picnic area. Great fun for family holidays in Tonga!
