Map of Niuatoputapu - Niuas islands Tonga
THE Niuas islands are the remotest of the four main island groups in Tonga, lying to the far north of the region. There are two main islands in the Niuas - Niuafo'ou and Niuatoputapu. The main island of Niuatoputapu can be accessed by domestic aircraft. The main town of Falehau also has a large jetty for inter-island boats to bring in supplies. A third smaller island in the group is a picturesque dormant volcanic peak, which can be seen easily from Niuatoputapu and is called Tafahi.
Due to the remoteness, tourism is not over-developed here, but resort accommodation can be found at Niuatoputapu. Activities to be enjoyed here include kayaking, snorkelling and swimming. There is a hilly ridge along the main island, and those who hike along the track are rewarded by stunning views. Biking is popular along the traffic-free roads and tracks. Whales can be viewed at certain times in the year as they migrate across the region. »» View the main Map of Tonga
Niuatoputapu is an idyllic South Pacific paradise far from the trappings of the modern world. Photos show Palm Tree Island Resort on the island of Hunganga, with a view of Tafahi.
