Cultural Traditions in Tonga

The Kingdom of Tonga is unique in the South Pacific in that it has never been conquered or ruled by other western civilisations. In other words it did not undergo a period of colonial rule as did many other of the island nations of this region. Tonga retains a royal family and independent government.

Population is only around 100,000 in the whole country, with about 70% resident on the main island of Tongatapu. Tongan is the primary language, but English is the business language so getting around is not difficult. Christianity is the main religion as a result of missionary influences in recent centuries. These are composed of Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (the dominant body), Catholic, Anglican, Seventh Day Adventists, Latter Day Saints and the Free Church of Tonga.

With a strong Christian ethic practiced by almost the entire population, everything is closed on a Sunday. However, this is one of the beauties also. A quiet, respectful and laid-back environment that is perfect for relaxation and getting away from the stresses of the modern-day western societies! Famous navigator and explorer Captain James Cook referred to Tonga as the 'Happy Isles'

Malo e lelei is Tongan for Welcome to Tonga.
